Our thanks to the Punjabi Heritage Association (PHA) of the Lehigh Valley Area for giving us a chance to showcase our photography skills at the 2nd Lohri Mela on January 18th, 2009, at the Estonian in Easton, PA.
The Lohri Mela truly captured the spirit of this seasonal festival of North India that marks the beginning of the end of winter and the coming of spring and the new year. Lohri is a festival dedicated to fire and the sun, with a traditional lighting of a bonfire with offerings of peanuts, popcorn and sweets made of sesame seeds and jaggery.
Lohri is supposed to mark the beginning of warm weather, although with the temperatures so far, it sure doesn’t feel like spring is around the corner!
The socio-cultural performances and folk dances by the participants were colorful and full of energy. We wish the community more and more success with such events in the future!
